About UnThink Solar
Be bold for solar. Stand out and educate.
Our UnThink Story
Once upon a time, about 5 years ago, give or take, UnThink Solar was founded by Tor “Solar Fred” Valenza, best known for his “UnThink Solar” marketing and communications blog with over 2 million page views on Renewable Energy World.
Over the years, Solar Fred has assembled an UnThinking team of devoted solar marketers, designers, and communicators who are all pros in their various marketing fields. Our collective solar marketing philosophy is simple:
- Engage solar customers.
- Stand out, delight, and educate about solar, regardless of residential, commercial or utility audiences.
- Be bold for solar.
- Be consistent, but flexible; ReThink and UnThink as necessary.
What does “UnThink” solar mean?
It means to step back and to unwind your traditional concept of solar marketing. The only way solar is going to get into the energy main stream is if solar marketers–and their clients–are willing to take creative risks, grab the public’s attention, and then educate prospects about the myths and realities of affordable solar power today.

Founder, CEO, and Chief Solar Marketer
Tor “Solar Fred” Valenza is the UnThinking brain behind UnThink Solar. As a teenager, Tor was fascinated by turning sunlight into free electricity and made plans to become a solar engineer! …And then he took calculus, chemistry, and physics and realized the world would be safer without him becoming a solar engineer. Nevertheless, after years as a successful writer and marketer in other fields, Tor finally began putting his humor, communication skills, and solar passion to good use by founding UnThink Solar. Since then, he’s become a leading solar marketing and advocacy voice with his former Renewable Energy World marketing blog and for hosting solar Tweetups at SPI and Intersolar.
It’s kind of what we’re known for. We love to engage with your solar customers, provide them with relevant useful info, and build your brand equity.
